Jan 26, 2015

Sometimes your furniture needs a little love. Between years of use and wear-and-tear, your

furniture’s upholstery may not look as good as it first did when you bought it. Good thing you don’t have to put your favorite pieces of furniture out on the curb for garbage day – there are many different ways you can save your furniture with these tips for resurfacing and upholstery restoration.

Furniture Scratches

Remember how those expensive dark wood chairs used to look before you had kids? Now they’re all scratched from toys, forks, and who knows what else being run over the chair arms. Well, with this simple solution, you can have your wooden chair arms looking as good as new again. Apply used coffer grounds to the scratch with a q-tip. Allow the grounds to sit for 5 to 10 minutes before buffing with a cotton rag. This trick works wonders on your dark wood scratches!

Touch Up with Sharpie

So you know you can use coffee grounds for your dark wood, but what about your medium and light wood? Well, Sharpie now has come out with a line of wood markers that will help you out! Their markers are specially designed to touch up any kind of wood furniture in a variety of colors. They work best on worn edges and large scratches and can be found at many different DIY stores.

Repair Your Own Upholstery

Did you know that repairing torn upholstery can be done yourself? All you need is a spoon, upholstery pin, fabric glue, and piece of heavy-duty fabric (like canvas) to fix a tear in your couch or chair.

  • Step 1: Cut the heavy-duty fabric larger than the fabric tear. Slide the fabric beneath the tear with the spoon handle.
  • Step 2: pin down the upholstery flap with the upholstery pin and brush a layer of fabric glue over the surface of the patch along the edges of the tear.
  • Step 3: Replace the torn flap on top of the patch, patting it to avoid squeezing the glue. Secure the flap down with additional fabric pins to ensure it stays put.

When in Doubt, Clean

You can use everything from baby wipes to hand-held steam cleaners to help get out stubborn stains and odors. Always make sure to check your upholstery tags first to ensure you won’t damage the fabric with the solution you choose.
