Ceramic or Porcelain?

While there are a ton of different tiles like glass, cement, and marble, we are going to talk about the most popular two: ceramic and porcelain. Porcelain is normally considered superior while Ceramic is considered cost-effective.

In general, ceramic tile is made from clay with a glazed finish pressed onto the top of the tile. You can find ceramic tiles with a textured and matt glaze finishes and they tend to be the better option when you are going for a smooth surface. Since ceramic is cheaper, you can get the job done with less money. A downside to this kind of tile is that it is not as strong as porcelain tile and if it chips, you can see the clay beneath. It also cannot be used outside as weather can cause cracking over time.

Porcelain is a solid raw material throughout. If it chips, the color beneath is the same and it is less likely to chip because it is a stronger tile. While it costs more you also want a pro to install it. Porcelain tile can only be cut with a wet saw and diamond blade. Porcelain requires less maintenance because the tile is less absorbent of water and will not require polishing or sealants.
