How to Make Your Own Homemade Grout Cleaner

Apr 6, 2015

Congratulations! You have made the decision to save money and develop a new skill.  You have decided to make your own home cleaning products and solutions.  While many do-it-yourselfers have seen the benefits to making their own home cleaning products, it is not always easy to know where to start.

We wanted to help you on your quest for simple and effective homemade cleaning solutions with a short list of some of the best homemade grout cleaners we know of.  Unfortunately, no solution comes scrub-free.  Always use rubber gloves when cleaning with these mixtures.  Also, use proper ventilation in the room you are using the products.  You may have to wait for your grout to dry before seeing the results you are hoping for.

Let us know which homemade grout cleaner worked for you!

  1. White Vinegar/Soap – The first homemade grout cleaner is a mixture of white vinegar and dish soap.  Dawn is a commonly used one.  This solution uses equal parts of both materials.  One DIY source, A Pretty Life in the Suburbs, suggests heating your vinegar for one minute in the microwave before adding the dish soap. Scrub vigorously and wipe clean with a damp cloth. (Lifehacker.com)
  2. Baking Soda/Bleach – Use about ¾ cup baking soda and ¼ cup bleach.  Mix together to form a thick paste.  Let this mixture sit for about ten minutes.  Scrub your grout with a small bristled brush.  Wipe clean with a damp cloth. (Practicallyfunctional.com)
  3. Hydrogen Peroxide – If your grout is more dirty and less stained, pouring hydrogen peroxide may be a good solution.  Let it sit for several minutes before scrubbing.
  4. Baking Soda/Vinegar – Mix ½ cup baking soda and ¼ cup vinegar to create a homemade grout cleaner paste.  Apply to grout with a toothbrush and let it sit.  Scrub and wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  5. Lemon Juice – This recipe is a little more complicated than some of the others, but you will most likely have these materials on hand.  Combine 7 cups water, ½ cup baking soda, 1/3 cup lemon juice, and ¼ cup vinegar.  Let the solution sit for several minutes before rubbing with cloth or bristled brush.
