Make Your Furniture Look Like New With These Homemade Upholstery Restoration Cleaners

Feb 11, 2015

If you love your upholstered couch and chairs, it’s hard to watch them over the years as they slowly collect dirt, grime, pet hair, and stains. Sadly, though, those problems will never go away by themselves, and without a bit of work on your part, they will only get worse. So, better to roll up your sleeves and get to work! However, before you run out to the store to buy a commercial chemical product, why not try a solution for your upholstery restoration with ingredients and products that you likely already have in your home?

Here are a few different ways you can clean your upholstery with everyday products:

  1. Baby Wipes. Did you know that the majority of stains on synthetic materials can be cleaned by using run-of-the-mill baby wipes? These work best if the stain is new and hasn’t had a chance to set in. Simply take a baby wipe and clean up the spill by blotting first to soak up the liquid. Then with another baby wipe, gently clean in circles to remove all potential stains.
  2. Simple Cleaner. If you are dealing with a larger stain that requires a little more power, try using this homemade upholstery restoration cleaning solution. Mix equal parts liquid dish detergent and water. Whip together with a whisk or hand mixer until it’s frothy. Dip a sponge into the solution and apply it on the upholstered surface, scrubbing lightly. Be careful, as too much scrubbing can damage the fabric. Rinse with clean water and let dry.
  3. Adding Vinegar. A mix of vinegar and water also works well as a natural homemade upholstery restoration cleaner. Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 1 cup of warm water and 1/2 Tbs. of liquid soap (only if your upholstery is badly soiled). Mix ingredients into a plastic spray bottle and spray the stain. Scrub the area with a sponge or rag until it comes clean. Note that this should only be used on synthetic materials, as vinegar can harm other materials.
